Lady's Island Lake, Broadway, County Wexford
South Wexford Coast • 29m
This guided tour explores the ancient pilgrimage route of Lady's Island Lake as part of the Trek Ireland in South Weford Coast virtual walking series.
In 150AD, Greek cartographer Claudius Ptolemaeus created his first world atlas and, although very little was known of Ireland at that time, he marked one place in Ireland as Hieron Akroterion—in Greek—or 'Sacred Cape' on his map. This place is now known as Carnsore Point, where a male druidic settlement was thought to be located and, nearby on a secluded lake island, was another pre-Christian place of female druidic worship called Lady's Island.
Our virtual tour brings you on a gentle, circular grassland route around this ancient pilgrimage site. Begin at the Marian statue, dedicated to Our Lady, and take the pilgrimage route around by the water's edge, where swans and terns mix with wide, expansive views over Lady's Island Lake and Tacumshin Lake.
Halfway along the tour, natural heritage guide Jim Hurley provides an in-depth account on the etymology of Lady's Island Lake before you continue towards the Norman tower at the end of the walk.
English, French, and German subtitles are available for each tour.
