Saltee Island Great offers visitors an unparalleled experience of natural island habitat featuring rocky reefs, natural grassland, and exposed rocky cliffs within a Special Area of Conservation (SAC). On the island, you will wander over the sea cliff flora of Thrift, Sea Campion, Sea Plantain, Sea Aster, Red Fescue, and wild bluebells flowering in early Spring. This island is also internationally important for colonies of breeding seabirds that include Fulmars, Kittiwakes, Guillemots, and Puffins with thousands of breeding pairs of Northern Gannets seen and heard at the Makestone Rock and Cat Cliff.
Saltee Island Great presents one of the few remaining places on the eastern shores of Ireland for breeding Grey Seals, with up to 250 mating pairs each year. Hopefully, you will be lucky enough to spot one or two on this virtual walking tour across the island.
